Komazawa Park International School!

Komazawa Park International School is a living institution: it throbs with laughter, cries, songs, the pitter-patter of tiny feet, and the shrill of excitement of happy children. At KPIS, our students love coming to school, and they love playing with their friends and being with their teachers. You can see it on their faces and hear it in their voices when you walk into our classrooms. We believe there is no other place more vibrant with children enjoying the time of their lives when nothing matters more than having fun.

 

Early childhood is such a wonderful time for children, and we need to be careful how we raise them during this precious period. Because children are fragile beings, it’s important to protect them and provide them with a nurturing environment, yet at the same time give them room to grow and experience things by themselves. Our school’s balanced curriculum allows children to mature naturally and at their own pace. We give our students structure and the freedom to choose, and we give them emotional and physical security.

 

In order to see positive changes and growth in a child, there needs to be compassion and care because they are like the water and the sun that nurture the growth of a seed. Likewise, it’s in this kind of an environment where a child becomes confident, creative, independent, intellectually risk-taking, resourceful, and social and emotional adaptable. These are the traits that we strive to develop in our students with the help of our qualified and experienced teachers.

 

We strongly believe in the value of free play, and Komazawa Olympic Park serves as a large open classroom where our students enjoy the freedom of running, tumbling, and playing around as well as climbing trees. The fallen leaves, twigs, and rocks provide natural materials for our students to stimulate their creativity, and the wide open area gives them the space they need to run around carefree and just be children.

 

Free play at Komazawa Olympic Park is only one of the many examples at KPIS that gives our students the opportunity to explore their surroundings, act on their intuition and grow in the process. Biography

Mrs. Shimo has been actively involved in the field of education for more than 40 years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to KPIS. She began her career in education as a teacher in the Philippines and within a few years became a nationally recognized teacher. After nearly two decades of teaching experience, Mrs. Shimo moved to Japan in 1985 and spent 14 years in an international school in Tokyo, initially as a homeroom teacher and then as the vice-principal. She later assumed the position of principal for the ESL division of that school and finally became head principal. Mrs. Shimo graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Philippine Normal University and later earned a Master of Arts in Child Psychology from the same institution. She also holds a Certificate of International School Leadership from the Principals' Training Center and regularly attends various workshops and conferences locally and abroad, which greatly contributes to our school's effective management. Mrs. Shimo is currently a member of the Japan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
